We often have to ‘reframe’ students or learners when they have difficulties or objections to what we are teaching. This can be time consuming and have a negative effect on other learners or even become a battle between yourself and your learners. In NLP it is often said that ‘five minutes of pre-framing is worth half an hour of reframing’ to get back on track. Pre-framing can help you to set expectations in the classroom or training room and give direction at an unconscious level. Consciously designing pre-frames allows a teacher or trainer to exclude, or include, attitudes and behaviours that could help or hinder learning.

Simple frames are composed of the approach you want them to take, the behaviours required and the attitude best suited to the activity.

Below are a few simple steps and a worksheet with some examples to help you begin to think in more detail about pre-frames. In essence preframing is the covert or upfront suggesting of how you want people to think, feel or behave.

Pre-framing starts with the teacher or trainer having a positive mindset and outcome for the lesson – not just in terms of the learning objectives but across the spectrum of what is needed in the classroom or training room to facilitate that learning objective. When our minds know what is expected of us then our natural compliance is activated; this is true for learning activities and for meetings. Any time when we don’t know what is expected of us there is the opportunity to generate any sort of behaviour. By framing what we want, rather than what we don’t want, we can begin to influence in the direction that will be most beneficial. Pre-frames can be used at the beginning and at the start of each part of a lesson or activity.

Today we are going to learn about the way prisms split light. Just as Isaac Newton did when he first investigated prisms we are going use his methodology and work step-by-step and cooperatively in threes drawing diagrams of the light being split. Before the end of the lesson we will all have a clear understanding of how prisms split light and we will discuss where this is useful in science industry.

In this example, whilst talking about Newton, we have embedded the approach, behaviours, attitudes and expected output and pre-framed the connection back to the real world.

1. Identify the approaches, behaviours and underlying attitudes you want your learners to have. Specifically, the ones that they will need to learn the skills or information you are going teach easily

2. For each one, think up a statement or experience that illustrates what you want from the learners. These statements could be explicit, for example: The way I want you to do this is . . . Or your statements could presuppose and assume the behaviours, for example: As you do this accurately you will find that . . .

3. Decide where in the session you need pre-frames and when you will deliver them. Deliver in sets of three – this makes it easier for the unconscious mind to hold them. More than three will not be taken in. Use the pre-frames think sheet to help you begin to work out your pre-frames.
